August

Newsletter

Despite the Dog Days of summer being upon us we have not let it dampen our enthusiasm for our stated mission.

During August we have launched a new voter outreach project.  Working from a list of 973 names of 18-25 year old voters of all political leanings, except strongly Republican, our first step will be sending postcards to all on the list.  Screven Forward members will divide the

names and all of us will work to reach those younger voters by mail.

Statistics show that younger voters favor Democratic candidates by large margins.  It is important to encourage them to vote!!

On August 8th a ZOOM Open Meeting/Membership Drive was held. Membership in Screven Forward now stands at 60 and growing!

Ella Rhodes, Screven Co. Elections Supervisor, along with a few Screven Forward members, met and filmed an instructional video about the voting process.  This video was made to provide new voters with the information they need to feel confident when they cast their votes.  Mrs. Rhodes walks you through each step in the voting process. This video is now up and can be viewed on YouTube!

One of our teacher members has started a True Voting Experience program at the Middle School.  Students will be walked through filling out registration forms, will review re-created ballots and have an "election day" on which they cast their votes.  They will experience

the voting process from start to finish.

Another member is working on the YOUth Vote program and expects to have it used in the Screven Co. school system as well.

Keven Farley, (former professional baseball player and formerly associated with the Eric Swallwell presidential campaign) now working on the Biden/Harris campaign, joined us at one of our weekly meetings and spoke to us about positive, successful voter outreach.

SMILE drive-thru food box distributions continued this month and our members were present to give out registration forms and mail-in ballot request forms.

We were excited to learn that Screven County will have a Drop Box for use in the upcoming election!

A peaceful candlelight vigil for Julian Lewis was held in downtown Sylvania on August 14th.  Screven Forward members handed out water during the vigil and Screven Forward provided the candles used.

The Screven Co. Democratic Committee held a Voter Registration Drive on Sat., August 22nd in the BiLo shopping center.  Several Screven Forward members were present to assist. Two more drives are planned for voting places out in the county.

We are looking forward to another ZOOM Open Meeting to be held on Saturday, September 5th at 11:00 am.  The film "Suppressed" will be screened and discussed.  Please join us!
